The Equator
The imaginary line circling the Earth midway between the North and South poles is called the equator. The circumference, or distance around, the equator is about 24,900 miles (40,000 kilometers). The equator divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The equator is a line of latitude and is defined as zero degrees.
