The Polar Zones encompass the areas around the poles, the Arctic Circle and Antarctica. The Arctic Circle includes most of the frozen part of the Arctic Ocean, most of Greenland, northern Canada and northern Siberia. Temperatures here are always very low; this is because the sun never gets very high in the sky.
The polar climate is also very dry, with less than 250mm of precipitation a year. This is why they are considered cold deserts. The polar zones (also called tundra) cover 20% of the Earth. In the summer, because of Earth’s tilt, the sun shines 24 hours of the day and therefore it never gets dark!
